TRISTAN GIANOLA TRIO
Guitarist /composer Tristan Gianola joins cellist Chris Beroes-Hagis and drummer Jake Gartenstein to form a trio performing chamber music inspired contemporary jazz. Their debut album HYMN comes out in winter of 2025 on Lantern Light Records.
While recorded in New Orleans, Hymn deviates from the swampy landscapes of Louisiana and harkens Gianola’s unique palette of jazz, drawing influences from Scandinavian jazz artists, contemporary classical music and raw, open-ended improvisation from the free jazz greats to create a desolate landscape occupied by thunderous, yet intimate, music. However, all the music featured on the album comes from Gianola’s years spent in New Orleans, with the title-track of the album Hymn being the first piece he composed upon arriving in November of 2016. In 2025, seeking to play music in a more intimate setting with lower volume, Gianola came to cellist Chris Bereos-Hagis to join a trio with Jake Gartenstein on drums (who Gianola has played with extensively since the pandemic). Together, as the Tristan Gianola Trio, the group performed every Tuesday through the spring of 2025 at New Orleans’ Prytania Bar, and once the residency was concluded the trio sought to record an album together.
